Visages
In Visages the inner state becomes a face. Sometimes it is a whole face coming out of the dark, as in Transition; more often it is cut down to an outline, a mask or an eye — the profile drawn in one pale line in Maestro, the yellow stare of Observer, one red-rimmed eye inside a storm of strokes in The Gaze. Persona Formation and Persona Collapse are two ends of the same process: a self assembled from pale crossed strokes in a blue whirl, and a green mask with a cracked block where the mouth should be.
I paint them in acrylic on canvas and paper, in layers. Every face here is asked the same thing — what it is holding, and what is left when the mask stops working.
