Graphite State

Graphite State draws the same diagram as Structural Energy, with color taken away. All of it is charcoal on paper of one size: black, rubbed gray and the bare white ground. Some sheets are structures — black nodes joined by lines, four eyes stacked on one axis, cross-hatched bands leaning on each other. Others are almost pure gesture: tangled strokes, smeared sweeps, a spiral half lost in the gray. With nothing else to work with, pressure and density do the whole job.
